Not All Estimates Are Created Equal
Two landscaping bids might look similar on paper — but what they include (or leave out) can vary wildly. One contractor might price for a full prep and quality materials, while another cuts corners to appear cheaper. If you’re comparing quotes or trying to understand where your money goes, this guide breaks down the key line items that matter most.
Removal of old sod, rock, or debris
Tilling or soil conditioning
Grading for drainage and proper slope
Soil amendment if planting or sodding
Vague or missing prep is a major red flag. Most issues start here.
Use of Class 6 road base or crusher fines, with specified depth (usually 4"–8")
Notes on compaction equipment (plate compactor or roller)
Edge restraint installation (paver edges, concrete ribbon, etc.)
Use of geotextile fabric or weed barrier if applicable
A patio built on loose soil or sand won’t last.
Clear listing of materials and exact quantities, e.g.:
“2.5 tons 1½” Colorado River Rock, delivered and spread”
“3 cubic yards black shredded mulch, 3" depth”
“500 sq ft Premium Tall Fescue sod from Green Valley Turf”
Avoid vague terms like “rock” or “mulch” which may hide cheaper materials.
Number of crew members or workdays included
Machinery used (skid steer, trencher, sod cutter, etc.)
Debris removal or dumpster fees
Site protection and cleanup details
Cheap bids may leave disposal out, causing extra costs later.
Plant warranty (typically 30–90 days with proper watering)
Hardscape warranty for settling or defects
Drainage performance guarantees
Policy for punch-list items or callback repairs
A good contractor backs their work and puts it in writing.
Compare value, not just total price
Watch for missing prep or materials
Be cautious of ambiguous labor or unusually low prices
Sometimes a higher bid with full prep and warranty saves money long-term.
