Low Maintenance Doesn’t Mean No Maintenance
Synthetic turf has a reputation for being completely maintenance-free. And while it's true that you won’t be mowing, watering, or fertilizing — there are still a few things you need to do to keep it looking and performing its best. If you’ve made the switch to artificial grass (or are thinking about it), this guide walks you through what real-world upkeep looks like.
Weekly to Monthly Tasks:
Blow off leaves and debris to prevent matting
Pick up pet waste and rinse off solid messes
Brush high-traffic areas with a stiff bristle broom to keep blades upright
Pro Tip: Avoid metal rakes or power brooms that can damage the backing.
Synthetic turf is pet-friendly, but it needs proper cleaning:
Use enzyme-based turf cleaners monthly
Hose down pet areas regularly (especially in summer)
Install a deodorizing infill (like ZeoFill) if odor becomes a problem
Consider a subsurface drainage layer during installation if pets are a priority
We often create designated pet zones to make this easier.
Yes — weeds can still grow in the seams or edges.
Treat with spot-safe herbicide
Trim overgrown grass or landscape borders
Keep mulch, soil, or organic matter off the turf surface
Proper install with weed barrier fabric and sealed seams greatly reduces this issue.
Snow & Ice:
You don’t need to remove snow — let it melt naturally
If clearing, use a plastic shovel and avoid heavy salt
Do not chip at ice — it may tear the turf
Spring:
Deep rinse and light brushing
Check infill levels and top off if needed
Fall:
Remove leaves before they compact and decompose
Blow debris before snow arrives
Infill top-off: Every 3–5 years depending on traffic
Seam inspection: Check for lifting, especially in corners
Spot patching: Possible for burns, heavy damage, or melted areas
Re-fluffing or brushing: Needed in high-use play or pet zones
Most turf lasts 10–15 years with proper care.
Don’t park cars or heavy equipment on turf
Avoid reflective windows or glass that may melt surface
No open flame, fire pits, or charcoal grills nearby
Keep turf free of soil, which feeds weeds and bacteria
From pet zones to putting greens, we install turf that holds up — and we’re always here if you need a repair or refresh.
