Sod Is Only as Good as What’s Under It
You can buy the best sod available — but if the ground underneath isn’t prepped properly, it will die, rot, or never root. In Colorado’s compacted soils and harsh conditions, site prep is everything. Here’s how we prepare yards for sod that stays green and thriving for years.
We start by removing:
Old turf
Weeds
Rocks, roots, and construction debris
Mulch or any material that blocks root contact
Pro tip: We don’t just scalp the surface. We strip the top 1–2 inches and dispose of waste offsite.
Tilling loosens compacted clay and allows roots to penetrate.
We use rear-tine tillers or skid steer rippers for larger areas.
Tilling mixes organic material and allows water to move through.
We test moisture levels and texture during this process.
Never lay sod over unloosened or rocky soil — it won’t root properly.
Colorado soil is often low in organic matter.
We add screened compost or topsoil at 1–2” depth.
This boosts root development and improves water retention.
In poor-fill yards, we may add more for full rebuild.
Pro tip: Avoid “fill dirt” or unscreened materials — they cause clumps and weeds.
We establish 2% slope away from all structures, meaning:
1/4" per foot of drop for the first 10 feet from the house
Smooth, level grade across the yard with no low spots
Final contour adjusted for beds, edging, or pathways
Laser levels or string lines ensure a smooth surface ready for sod.
Before sod arrives, we:
Rake the surface flat and remove clumps
Use a lawn roller to lightly compact and check for dips
Check irrigation system (if installed) for coverage
Flag sprinkler heads or mark obstacles
If it rains — we pause. Mud kills sod prep.
Best time to install: Spring or early fall.
Avoid extreme heat or frozen ground.
Sod should be laid within 24 hours of delivery.
First watering must happen immediately after install.
We coordinate delivery and install schedules to ensure success.
We’ll prep your soil the right way, install high-quality sod, and give you a lawn that roots deep and stays healthy.
