Built-In Seating That Doubles as Structure
Seating walls are one of the most practical upgrades for any patio. They offer built-in seating, frame your space, and can even serve as small retaining structures — all while looking sharp. But like anything in landscaping, the value depends on how and where they’re built. Here’s what you need to know.
A seating wall is a low wall, typically 18–21 inches tall, that provides a place to sit around a patio or fire pit. It can be straight, curved, or wrap around a space.
Common materials include:
Segmental retaining wall block
Natural stone
Veneered concrete block with a stone cap
They’re a good fit if you:
Have a small patio and want to maximize seating
Are building near a fire pit and don’t want to deal with furniture
Want structure around edges or elevation changes
Like a clean, built-in look with no clutter
They may not be ideal if:
Your yard is flat and already has ample space for furniture
You want the flexibility to rearrange seating
You’re trying to minimize costs on a tight budget
Footing: Compact base, just like a retaining wall
Block: Structural-grade block or mortared CMU
Backfill: Gravel to allow drainage
Capstone: 3 to 4 inch bullnose or flat cap, glued in place
Slope: Slight pitch to prevent water pooling
We build seating walls to last — not just to look good for a year.
Use curved walls around circular fire pits
Match wall materials to nearby patio or home elements
Integrate lighting beneath the cap for subtle ambiance
Add short ends or “pillars” for visual anchors
Expect $80 to $110 per linear foot, depending on material and access. More curves and height changes increase cost — but the visual impact is usually worth it.
We’ll show you how seating walls can turn your flat patio into a layered, multi-use living space.
