It’s Not Glamorous, But It’s Everything
Grading isn’t the part of landscaping you see — but it’s the part that keeps everything working. Whether you’re installing sod, pavers, drainage, or even mulch beds, the ground beneath must be sloped and shaped correctly. If it’s not, water will pool, turf will fail, patios will shift, and erosion will start. Here’s why grading is the quiet backbone of every great yard we build.
Grading is the process of shaping and leveling the ground to:
Control water flow
Create proper foundations for patios, lawns, and planting beds
Prevent erosion, pooling, and water damage
It involves establishing positive slopes away from structures and smoothing surfaces to ensure long-term stability and health of your landscape.
Grading is one of the very first steps in nearly every landscaping project.
We always create a minimum 2% slope (2 inches of drop per 10 feet, or 2 feet per 100 feet) directing water away from all structures, including:
Foundations
Patios
Deck posts
Garages
Crawlspaces
This slope extends at least 5–10 feet from the house before transitioning to neutral grade or directing water into swales, dry creek beds, or drainage systems.
Set grade precisely using laser levels and string lines
Compact base soil in layers (called “lifts”)
Final surface pitches subtly toward one or two sides for drainage
Till and regrade subsoil to remove compaction
Add quality topsoil if needed
Smooth and roll to avoid dips, bumps, or low spots
Slightly mound beds to maintain natural contours
Grade gently toward turf or rock zones to encourage water flow
Watch for these warning signs:
Water puddling near foundations or in low spots
Patchy or uneven turf growth; soft, spongy ground
Settling or cracking around patios and edges
Downspouts draining into flat or uphill areas
Erosion marks or exposed roots after rain
Most issues can be corrected with regrading — often without needing full excavation.
Use professional tools like transit or laser levels instead of eyeballing
Compact and shape subsoil before installing any features
Design the finished grade for both function and aesthetics
Coordinate grading with drainage plans and underground utilities
Ensure early access for heavy equipment to work efficiently
Good grading upfront saves thousands in costly repairs and maintenance down the road.
We’ll assess your yard, fix the grade, and build a foundation that supports every other part of the landscape.
