Beautiful Beds Shouldn’t Create Costly Repairs
Landscaping around the perimeter of your home adds curb appeal — but it also carries risk. Poor slope, heavy mulch, or plants placed too close can cause moisture problems, pests, and even foundation damage. Here’s how we safely landscape near foundations and siding while keeping everything clean, functional, and beautiful.
The #1 rule: Water must flow away from your house.
We ensure:
A minimum 2% slope for the first 5–10 feet from the foundation
Soil or gravel pitched away from the home
Regrading and compacting of any settled areas near the foundation
Flat or back-sloped areas can cause standing water and long-term moisture issues — especially in Colorado’s clay-heavy soils.
Best practice:
Install a rock drip edge or gravel border 18–24" wide along the foundation
Prevents mulch buildup and splash damage on siding
Improves drainage and deters ants, spiders, and termites
Avoid:
Mulch piled directly against siding or trim
Raised beds that touch stucco or wood
Organic materials close to entry points or vents
Good options include:
Low-growing evergreens like juniper, boxwood, or dwarf spruce
Drought-tolerant ornamental grasses
Spaced perennials such as catmint, daylily, or salvia
Avoid planting:
Deep-rooted or aggressive species like bamboo or willow
Tall shrubs that trap moisture against siding
Overcrowded beds that limit airflow or block window access
We design for both airflow and long-term foundation health.
Installation best practices:
Sprinkler heads should be at least 12" from the house
Drip lines must be routed to avoid pooling near the foundation
All utility boxes, meters, and cleanouts must remain uncovered and accessible
We flag all utilities and irrigation lines before digging to avoid surprises.
Ongoing care recommendations:
Keep mulch and soil 2–4" below siding
Use aluminum or steel edging for clean, defined lines
Check after storms for erosion or pooling
Regrade and refresh beds every few years to maintain slope
The right edges and elevation details prevent future water damage and reduce maintenance.
We’ll build clean, safe perimeter landscaping that looks great — and protects your home for years to come.
