If You Live on the Front Range, Wind Isn’t Optional
Open lots, prairie developments, and hilltop properties across Colorado experience intense wind — sometimes sustained, sometimes sudden. If your fence or structure isn’t built with wind in mind, it can lean, split, or fail entirely. Here’s how we build durable fences, pergolas, and outdoor structures that hold up when the gusts hit.
Common issues we see:
Fence panels pushed out or pulled from posts
Pergola roofs lifted off frames
Gate posts twisted or broken off
Cheap fasteners failing under shear stress
Vinyl fences cracking in wind gusts over 50+ mph
If you’re in areas like Erie, Firestone, or eastern Longmont — you’re probably in a wind corridor.
Use Steel Posts
Set in 36" concrete footings
Stronger than wood, resists twist and lift
Can be wrapped in cedar for visual appeal
Shorter Panel Spans
Reduces surface area exposed to gusts
6-foot spans are ideal in wind-heavy zones
Avoid large “sail-like” panels without breaks
Horizontal Fencing With Gaps
Horizontal slats with spacing reduce wind pressure
Offers privacy while allowing wind passage
Modern look and better performance over time
Deep-Set Gates and Hardware
Gates use double hinges and cross-bracing
Latch posts reinforced with steel or triple fasteners
Anchoring:
Footings dug 30–48" and anchored in concrete
Post brackets rated for uplift and shear resistance
Ledger board attachment with lag bolts and brackets (not just nails)
Roofing:
Slatted tops allow wind to pass
Solid roofs require wind-rated panels and gable bracing
Avoid fabric awnings unless retractable
Joinery:
Beams use structural screws or lag bolts
Decorative notching is fine, but structural integrity comes first
Don’t build walls or fencing perpendicular to prevailing winds
Use wind breaks like trees or staggered plantings
Choose flexible materials like cedar, steel, or engineered composites
Avoid overhanging structures unless fully reinforced
We’ve rebuilt many storm-damaged installs — most were “builder grade” and not designed for wind zones.
Some HOAs have height limits or material restrictions.
We help homeowners get approval for upgraded designs that stay within visual rules but outperform standard installs.
Let’s design a fence, pergola, or outdoor space that’s made to last in Colorado’s most exposed neighborhoods.
